Wow, 2 weeks and I have not written. I have been working double time, it seems. I was volunteered for the e-record project at work. The Epic electronic medical record is going live in March 2011 at University of Rochester Medical Center, and I am glad to be part of it! A lot of dynamic conversation in the validation sessions. It has meant, however, more days of working, or at least weekends. My last two weekend shifts, Saturday and last Sunday, have been up at 4:00 am. to get to work at 5:00 am. since there were no residents there those days to examine the patients and write the notes. Got it done, though I am not signing up to be the intern real soon. I could have done it easier 30 years ago, LOL!
February will have some tough days. My work partner, Lorraine, goes to a well-deserved Hawaii conference in a couple of weeks, and is extending that for 10 more days of vacation. I wanted to do that last year, but my work partner Andrew took a new job and had to start on March 1st, or so it was deemed. The person who was leaving on that job was there a month after he started, so it did not seem so necessary to preclude me having an extra few days in Paradise. If I had stayed in Maui an extra day, I could have seen the Jimmy Buffet concert there. Where better to have a Cheeseburger in Paradise? Andrew had taken an extra week in Hawaii the year before when it was his turn to go, so I was a bit annoyed that he had to leave then and there. It would not have happened had it been the other way around, I can assure you of that!! Oh well! Maybe next year will be my turn for a bit more relaxation. The conference is my turn to go again, so we will see how it goes!!
My gym activities have been great. I did not go yesterday, but did 5 classes and activities on Friday, anticipating a busy work day on Saturday. I have done about 60 classes this past month, which has meant I have gotten a lot out of my YMCA membership. I feel like I have been in the pool enough to have turned into a fish!! I seem to be getting well-known around there, because I have been there almost every day, at various times of the day, depending on my work schedule.
It has been brutally cold here lately. 6 degrees this morning, and I hear it got below zero last night. I put food out for the birds, out on the deck. So much for Al Gore and global warming this winter in Rochester!
Well, back to the tasks of the day. Cleaning is in order and to the gym later for some Yoga and for Aqua Zumba!
Have a good day, followers!

Another week of fitness!
It seems like a few days since I have written. Maybe this is because I feel like "The Biggest Looser" having spent so much time at the YMCA lately. Just to recap: Today, there was Dance Fit, Cardio Training Boot Camp, Stretch and Strengthen, and Pilates. That was nearly 4 hours at the gym!!! So, wonder why I will go to bed early?
I worked 12 hours yesterday, and then went to the YMCA for Fired Up Maxx class. It was a great water workout! I missed Tuesday, because I think I either had food poisoning or a stomach virus that lasted about 24 hours, but of course did not preclude going to work.
Sunday was aqua Zumba. Yoga, and more swimming; Saturday I went to Hi-Lo aerobics and then went to teach my cloth covered basket class at Patricia's. So, I have been busy at the gym. I also lost 8 pounds in 14 days, yahoo!!!
So I have made a good start on the year, and there will be less of me to see by the end of the year, as I am not giving up on this!!!
Hope the rest of you have kept your New Years' resolutions, too!

It has been a good week for fitness!
I did go to the YMCA yesterday. I ended up going to the Y and making the Zumba class lower impact. It was fun...Spanish and Latin kind of musical theme, and constant motion. Then went back in the afternoon for aqua yoga. The pool was a bit cool, and it was so inactive I could not even keep warm. Guess that is not the class for me. The next water class however was a more aerobic water class, and I enjoyed that.
Went to PT today. Adam, my main therapist is going to start his own clinic, also out of the Lattimore group later this month. I am happy for him. He is smart, and has done well by me. He seems very goal oriented, and is an excellent therapist with a good way with people. I actually like Paula and Leah, as well. They all work well together, and I have enjoyed the friendly back and forth between them. They have all gotten me back on my feet. Adam did my ultrasound treatment and my ankle massage, and there was less fluid today, so all of my exercise has not hurt things in my ankle at all(except from my one day from HELL at work!) Their encouragement made me feel so good! They remembered I had said I was going to join the YMCA, and were encouraging about that, and maybe a bit surprised that I have just about lived there this week!!! I will miss not seeing them, but it is time to move on. I made one more PT appointment with Adam in 2 weeks, so he can follow my progress at the YMCA and make sure I am not doing anything harmful to the leg, but I think I will be fine. I know how to make the high impact stuff lower impact if I am in any of those classes, and will stay away from the obviously high impact events, like the step classes that I had enjoyed in the past. Anyway, from there I went and was evaluated for the fitness circuit. I felt muscles I did not even know that I had!!! I went to Target and Aldi's, as they had some of the exercise stuff I have been using at the gym and at PT, and on sale for the New Year, so used some of my Christmas money on that...a nice gift for myself. Now I have to stick to it, and one thing I noticed that in the week I did manage to also loose 5 pounds!!! Yah!!!
Back to the Y, and then Pilates. Now, the muscles I found in the morning I refound in the afternoon. I really enjoyed it!!! The teacher Kelly was great, and suggested the beginning Yoga class, which I will try. I have never done Yoga. I am looking for some more balance work. My leg balance is really still off, and this will help me not to have to be so cautious when I walk. I still worry about slipping again.
Anyway, took Aunt Norma to dinner at Grinnels in Brighton. Always good there! We had a combo plate, each the same thing, with lamb, pork chop, and sausage, and brought the pork chop and sausage home. It was tasty/ They played Happy Birthday to her, and we shared a small slice of cheesecake.
Now, time for relaxation and bed soon! Busy day! Was going to get more cleaning done this week, but I think the jump start on the exercise was more important! Until tomorrow.....I feel like a contestant on the "biggest looser"

Brrrr! It is a real cold one in Upstate New York--so much for global warming!
After my work marathon, I managed to sleep until 7:30 this morning, and then finally got it together to go to the Y this afternoon, where I had a cup of coffee, read the paper, and got myself in gear to swim a mile--32 lengths of the pool, before 10 minutes in the hot tub. That felt good! Then, had to hurry to meet my neighbor at Pittsford Plaza to see the movie "It's Complicated" with Merle Streep. I have not laughed so hard in a long time! Great movie!!! Merle Streep can do nothing wrong in my eyes, anyway. Then, a quick salad at Applebees, and browsing books at Barnes and Noble bookstore. Bought a calendar, and two healthy cookbooks. I do love reading cookbooks. Do they count for the reading list, Val? They are healthy ones!
So, I think I am on track for exercises. Oh, I also bought 3 CD's for Pilates, and exercises at home. I am planning to go to a beginning Pilates class tomorrow, since I have no idea what Pilates is, and it seems like it would probably be low-impact which is what my ankle is calling for these days.
So, will update tomorrow. Stay warm, those of you in Upstate New York. We are getting our snow, and I do not see spring or global warming in sight, here!

Some days do just not work out the way you want them to!
Well, I tried to go to the gym yesterday after work....but, since I left work at 11:30 pm....let's see...6:30 am until 11:30 pm. That is a lot of hours...well, I am on the salary plan, so does not matter. But, the YMCA does not have midnight hours. One of those days. I hate Mondays anyway. Rounded with one of the attendings, and then had to round again with another one, who could not see her patients by herself. By that time I was in the middle of trying to discharge patients and finish paperwork. Then, I was in a great mood to have a meeting with my boss. I tried to not have too much of a moan and groan session, but it seemed to come out that way....not just pleading the case for myself but some other coworkers that are having a hard balancing act as well.
Then, 8 admissions from the OR. The residents were in the OR most of the day, so just more work for me there. Dealing with sick patients, sepsis, esophageal leaks, hypotension, and sending a patient to the ICU, as well as about 50 pages and phone calls is a lot of juggling.
I knew when I could not heat up my acorn squash until 4:00 for lunch that things were not going to go in a timely fashion. Plus the patients were scattered all over the place. I did my best, but did not leave work until 11:45. The patients were all stable. I walked out to a winter wonderland, glistening snow from the lights walking up Crittenden Blvd. I felt tired but accomplished. That is the monday of a nurse practitioner in a busy surgical thoracic practice....not for the whimpy worker, for sure.
To the YMCA! Think I will try a water aerobics class. I am still whipped, so probably not a mile in the pool, but something to energize me as well.
Lots of snow on the ground in Upstate NY. It is pretty, but how many days until spring?

So cold and windy!
Well, welcome to winter in Upstate NY. I did get out of work, later than I would have wanted, but in time to go to the gym. I was tired, so my workout did not meet the time or effort of January 1st and 2nd, and I just felt it was not a swim day, however it might have made me feel better to get in the sauna....well, anyway, I did a graded workout on the exercise bike while I watched an ice skating program on TV, so that time passed quickly. 1/2 hr. of that, and about 15 minutes of stair stepper. Then, my ankle started to twinge, so I decided to come home. Will do some stretching later before bed. But I got there, and did something.
Now, the dilemma....do I go at 5:15 tomorrow before work, since I have to be at work at 6:30, or do I go after work? I think the answer is going to be after work, since I think I will swim tomorrow, and that would not give me much time to get to work with dry hair and a bit of makeup on.
Do I feel guilty for taking 2 vacation days next week? I am planning to work tomorrow, and I can mull that over. I got such little time around the holidays, I feel I deserve it. Working both weekends when my work partner Lorraine was on vacation, missing church and working over 12 hrs. on Christmas eve, and the day after Christmas, and most of this last week and today does not make me feel like being a work over-achiever this week, since most of my co-workers had blocks of at least 5 days off. I did have 6 days off earlier in December, but somehow going to visit my relatives in Georgia does not always feel like vacation. I love them dearly, but around Christmas this year it brought me as much stress as relaxation, and I came back ready to go to work. And I am not Catholic, so I do not need to have that Catholic school guilt. The end of the month is going to be a mess at work, anyway. We are ramping into electronic medical records--the Epic system within 1 1/2 years, and I got volunteered for the project. That is at least a 3 day commitment for each the next 3 months. Of course, in January, it happens the week the chief resident is on vacation, the other residents have apsite tests on the one weekend, and Lorraine and I have to work the prior weekend. So, I guess I should take off while the getting is good!!!
Well, dinner is ready...roasted acorn squash and potatoes. I love squash!
Bye for now....exercise goals are on track. I just have to work at my job goals!

Snow!
We finally have gotten our fair share of snow, however it is the blowing variety, with air temperatures around 13 degrees. I am disappointed to be working today, and not be at church, however may not have been a great day to go to church 50 miles away in this blowing wind. Sometimes they cancel it with such wind chills, however Penn Yan was not supppose to get all of the snow that we did.
The YMCA does not open until 8:00 am. on Sunday, which nixed going to the YMCA this morning, but I am going after work today. I may just do the exercise bike and random excercises that I do at PT because my hair coming out of the pool would look like stiff seaweed character today.
Waiting for my patient chest X-Rays to be done, and for my transfer down from the ICU. I have the QA (quality assurance) caught up, and it has not been a bad day, however it adds to the days I worked over the holidays without getting many off, grrr! I am planning more off this week, as my work partner Lorraine will be back from vacation. The time will not get tight until later in the month when residents take vacation off. We will manage!
I will report on my PT progress later!!

Happy New Years!
Happy New Year, everyone!!! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!
I have decided to continue my blog this year. Instead of the blog of "Julie and Juila" written about Julie Powell cooking all the recipes from Julia Childs' cookbook, I am going to blog about my progress with excerise and getting FIT! Then, if I do not keep up with it this year, you can all kick me in the butt!!
So, on January 1, 2010, I joined the Pittsford YMCA. It is 2.2 miles from my house. I actually had belonged in the past before my work schedule got so crazy, and then I switched to walking in my subdivision 2 miles a day, and then to walking as part of Weight Watchers with Laurie, and on the Erie Canal path, with my friend Chell, which was enjoyable, and consistent. Then, when I broke my ankle this summer I was not too mobile for a couple of months, and then went to physical therapy twice a week. That really helped my balance and strength, but I think I am ready for the gym. I have paid $750.00 in copays to PT, and might better put that in the future to the gym, since they have the same equipment I have been using in PT. At least that sounds like a good plan!!!
So, yesterday I went to the YMCA and swam 44 laps. I thought that was a mile, but actually 32 lengths is a mile, so I was an overachiever! Sat in the whirlpool for 15 minutes, and then did 15 minutes on an exercise bike and 15 minutes on a stairstepper. Today I did 40 lengths in the pool, and 30 minutes on the exercise bike. I have to remember to bring some earphones to listen to the music or watch the TV while I am in the fitness center. So, after that, I had water, coffee and a banana. So, I will blog how my progress is coming along. I want to be in good shape before I go to Alaska in May. I found that the swimming actually made my leg feel good. I could feel the work on the bike, but no pain, so will continue the low impact stuff and especially the swimming. The Y opens at 5:15, so it is a question if I go swim for a half hour before I go to work, or after work. It takes a month they say to change behavior, so I will just have to make sure I have changed into good habits.
My New Years' Resolutions:
1. Continue with a fitness program to increase endurance, get in shape and loose weight.
2. Spend more time with my relatives and good friends for fun and healthy relationships. Cherish my friendships.
3. Trust the Lord to look after my needs, and pray every day. Do more with my church friends this year.
4. Balance my work time better and don't feel I have to be everything to everybody at work. Try to remember that it is a team and not a solo effort! Don't feel bad when you have to say NO!
5. Eat healthy and remember to consume 5 fruits and veggies a day!
6. Organize my house better and clean out what I am not using. Donate to charity.
7. Volunteer and help others.
8. Finish projects--quilting, knitting, crafts. Lots of things are waiting for me to finish!
9. Stop enabling people. In order to accomplish what you need to in your own life you sometimes have to be selfish with your own time and efforts.
10. Don't be afraid to ask others for help when you need it. Friends do appreciate being needed!
11. Become politically active.
So, that sounds pretty good! Remind me if I do not appear to be on track to keep these goals for the year~
Happy New Year friends and family!
